When it comes to the best authentic Thai restaurant in Massachusetts, White Coconut is the place to be. Our family-owned establishment takes great pride in holding true to our family recipes that have been handed down through the generations. However, the word recipes doesn’t just refer to our authentic cuisine, it refers to drink also! And, on April 30th you’ll find us celebrating National Bubble Tea Day! Or as we like to call it, Thai Boba Tea.
Boba tea, also called bubble tea, is an authentic creamy, iced Taiwanese drink said to have been created in the 1980s. The drink combines tea, milk, spices, and (of course) the exciting addition of bubbles! No, not bubbles that you blow through a straw – pearls or boba that are made from tapioca. The appearance of the boba creates the illusion of bubbles within the beverage.
Boba is made from partially cooked tapioca flour, the starch extracted from the cassava root. Gluten-free and flavorless, boba is truly a fun addition to any iced or hot beverage. Because of the tapioca base, boba is also called Tapioca Pearls. The key when making boba lies within the timing. If they sit too long, the pearls begin to dry out and become stiff – the exact opposite of what bubble tea is about! Instead, these little balls of fun should be chewy when consumed.
While plain black tea is the easy substitute for this creamy beverage, authentic flavor calls for authentic tea. Thai teas are crafted from a strong black tea base but are then infused with spices. With various additions like cardamom, tamarind, and star anise, you’re provided a distinct and delectable flavor true to Thai culture.
With the warmer seasons settling into Massachusetts, we couldn’t think of a better time to celebrate. This April 30th, or anytime really, stop by White Coconut Thai Restaurant to experience the ultimate, most authentic Bubble Tea in the region!
