As our previous article mentioned, Thai spice is categorized in levels for consumer awareness. The combination of chili peppers, garlic, ginger, and other herbs creates a unique experience for the taste buds. However, as the premier Thai restaurant near the Burlington Mall, the team at White Coconut has often seen people misjudge the power of the Thai spice. Unlike the American spice level, Thai food takes spicy to new levels.
Because we love our customers and appreciate your taste buds, we want to take a moment to explain the Thai spice scale, so that you can have a guide next time you visit us!
If you’re not a fan of spice, that’s okay! The wonderful trait of Thai spice is that it’s easily customizable for preference. When ordering, 0 or 1 on the spice scale is your safest choice; 0 being no spice at all. Level 1 will provide consumers with the Thai spice flavor at generally comfortable levels of tolerance.
Naturally, when moving up the scale in spice intensity, level 2-3 will be the next in line. However, be aware that taking the spice up a notch is no joke when dealing with Thai cuisine. Authentic Thai spice level 2 is considered moderately spicy. Level 2 is compared to the average “American hot” spice level. Thus, level 3 may be too spicy for people to handle if they’re not able to handle spicy foods.
If you’re feeling brave, levels 4 and 5 provide the most heat in Thai food. However, please don’t say we didn’t warn you as level 4 is typically too spicy for most people. Level 5, often referred to as “Thai hot,” is the level authentic to the Thai culture. If you’re looking for a truly authentic experience, then level 5 it is. But again, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
One thing to keep in mind is that different restaurants gauge their spice charts differently. Although the above guideline is a safe go-to when in doubt, it’s always best to inquire with your server. Remember, you can always add more spice, but you can’t take it away!
